The first 2-day Grand Canyon State Summer Games Table Tennis Tournament took place Saturday & Sunday, June 21 & 22, 2003. It was, by far, the largest turnout in Grand Canyon State Game history, with over 80 players signed up. The Open Singles featured Chetan Baboor, ranked 107th in the World and 2677 USATT. The only question was who would be number two in the finals. Chetan beat Derrick Cone in the Open Finals, but it was a great match to watch and Derrick, rated under 2000, made a good showing for himself with a few incredible points. The tournament also featured a teams event as well as the much anticipated "PING PONG CHAMPIONSHIP" - ..an event that allowed any type of racket, any type of rubber or sandpaper, and, any and all serves. We even used old, worn out, sometimes cracked, white, 1-star Halex 38mm balls. The event had players serving under their legs, over 3/4 of the table, and using black long pips on 1 side, black inverted on the other. One player even wore an old white undershirt to distract his opponent and attempted to dip the ball in water between points. Matches were best of 3, to 21 points. The winner was Leo Lucas with Swedish player, Ola Agren coming in second. A great time was had by all that attended. |
